Australia's most successful off-spinner will watch the five-match one-day series against India starting on Sunday from the comfort of his Sydney loungeroom, having recently returned from the two-Test excursion to Bangladesh where he took a phenomenal 22 wickets.

Lyon has played 13 ODIs for Australia, taking 17 wickets. He'll play for NSW in the fast-approaching one-day domestic series before contesting three Sheffield Shield matches to prepare for this summer's Ashes series.

"I'm always putting my hand up to play cricket for Australia in any format, that's my goal, that's my ambition," Lyon said.

"I just need to come out here and perform well in the one-day domestic competition that starts in two weeks and enjoy that.

"I'm really enjoying my cricket, I have done for the last little bit very much. I've just got to go out there and enjoy it, play well and keep putting my hand up for selection."

Lyon led the Australian attack in Bangladesh alongside NSW paceman Pat Cummins, who was left as the only fit, front-line bowler once Josh Hazlewood was forced home with a side strain.

His 22 wickets at an average of 14.3 was no fluke. The former Canberra cricketer worked closely with spin bowling mentor John Davison to mould his technique in the lead up to the Bangladesh series.

"Working with John Davison before going over to Bangladesh, and a lot of phone calls back and forth with him up at the NCC (National Cricket Centre) was pretty important for me to get my head space right to go over there and perform in the subcontinent," Lyon said.

"It's a hard place to play cricket, you're out of your comfort zone and you're tested [by the conditions].

"It's about, for me, putting my ego aside and bowling ugly - especially in the subcontinent, and really trying to come out with a few different variations where I probably haven't been able to do that in the past.

"I've been stuck falling in love with the stock off-break where I have some success here in Australia. It's about, for me, adapting and learning from those experiences and also putting that into play here in Australia.

"I'm willing to adapt and it's just about adapting to the conditions ASAP and really enjoying the challenge that the Poms are going to bring out to us."

Australia plays three T20s against India after the ODI series before coming home and ramping up Ashes preparations.

"Every series for Cricket Australia, as soon as you put on the hat and the jersey and you go out and play, it's important," Lyon said.

"The one-day team will be no different, they'll be talking about momentum heading into the Australian Ashes. They don't want to go over there and lose five-nil, I'll give you that hot tip.

"They want to go over there and win five-nil and then win the three T20s as well.

"It's important for the team to go out there and perform well and get some confidence out of performing well in the subcontinent."
