The 11th annual show at Glenara Lakes Retirement Village featured 68 different classes of orchids.
Mr Whitney said that he was proud of his prize-winning Masde Vallia.
“I bought it off a friend a few years ago in Burnie,” he said.
“This one was actually reserve champion last year and grand champion this year.
“With the Masde Vallias, their tails often go off, so I’ve been spraying the tails every day with water so they don’t dry out.”
Mr Whitney explained that judges concentrate on shape when judging competing orchids.
“It’s mostly shape that judges look at,” he said.
“It’s mostly a round shape for most orchids.”
