Organisers are expecting up to 2000 different registered garage sales in Tasmania for the national initiative, which sees people running their own pop-up op-shops for a weekend.
The Launceston event will take place on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22.
Event co-founder Darryl Nichols said the event was an opportunity for community members to build stronger relationships.
“The average person who does Sale Trail meets somewhere between 35 and 44 new locals through the day,” Mr Nichols said.
“When you put all your stuff at the front of the house it’s saying ‘this is who I am,’ and it provides a really nice forum for conversation.”
Event organisers say that the event has a significant environmental impact – almost 600,000 items were saved from rubbish tips in the 2016 sales.
Additionally, 86 per cent of participants became more conscious of their own environmental impact according to post-event surveys.
Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten said that the Garage Sale Trail helped the council reach its waste management goals.
“It’s absolutely important for the community to get involved and re-use,” he said.
“We want as little as possible to go to the landfill, which is something we’ve been encouraging for quite some years now.
“ [Council members] all try and find something around the house to help.”
