Last year’s skipper Tim Paine will be Bailey’s deputy.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity, it’s been a couple of years since I’ve had the captaincy,” said Bailey, who is in Pakistan touring for the World XI.
“There’s been a few changes – new coach, new CEO, so there’ll be a different feel around the group.
“It’s the one tournament Tasmania hasn’t won yet so I’m looking forward to rectifying that.”
It means Bailey will get the chance to captain in his home city, with the Canes to face Sydney Thunder at Launceston’s UTAS Stadium on December 30.
Bailey scored 249 runs at 49.40 last summer, while Paine scored 227 and made nine dismissals while winning his way back into the T20I side.
Paine said he he believed he and Bailey’s leadership styles worked well together.
“We’ve obviously both been with the Hurricanes for some time now and it’s great to have a couple of Tasmanians leading the side,’’ he said.
“Hopefully with the squad we’re putting together we can be a really competitive side in BBL07 and get back to playing in the finals.”
