Cricket Australia will announce on Friday that Launceston and Hobart will co-host the under-19 men’s national championships from December 4-15.
UTAS Stadium and Bellerive Oval will both stage two day-night contests as players vie for selection to the 2018 under-19 World Cup.
The news is another significant boost for Tasmania following last month’s announcement that Bellerive will stage the finals of the domestic one-day competition after the state also hosted junior national hockey, cross-country and road cycling titles this year.
Cricket Tasmania operations manager Chris Garett said: “If playing games in both Hobart and Launceston is successful then this model could be replicated in future.”
City of Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten added: "We have already hosted the women's Big Bash League here in Launceston, and we're extremely excited about the prospect of hosting the Hobart Hurricanes later in the year.
"This national junior tournament will go a long way to cementing Launceston's growing reputation as one of the top sporting capitals of the country.”
Rounds 3, 4 and 5 will be played in Launceston on December 7, 8 and 10 with the quarter-final, semi-final and final in Hobart on December 12, 13 and 15.
Tasmania will play in the first day-nighter in Round 2 at Bellerive against the Cricket Australia XI.
Some 20 players from last year’s under-19 national championships are now on contracts with states, including Mac Wright and Liam Devlin in Tasmania.
