Police were called to Earnest Street, Kings Meadows, about 7.45pm on Tuesday, in response to a “large disturbance”.

At the scene, a 22-year-old Kings Meadows man was being treated by ambulance officers after being stabbed in the gut.

The perpetrator remains at large.

Tasmania Police Detective Inspector John King said investigations indicated the Ernest Street house’s occupants and a second group had come to blows over debt allegations.

It’s believed the groups are known to each other.

“The call was for a large disturbance involving a large amount of people breaking glass and screaming,” Detective Inspector King said.

“[The] altercation or argument was over some sort of debt, the details of that debt are unknown to us.”

While no arrests had been made on Wednesday night, Detective Inspector King said Launceston Criminal Investigation Branch officers had interviewed six to eight people over the incident.

“At this stage we have not identified who was responsible for providing that wound,” he said.

Police have also interviewed the victim, who was released from the Launceston General Hospital on Wednesday.

“He has been unable to identify the assailant,” Detective Inspector King said.

“The victim is unsure of the exact time that he was stabbed, it may have been at the rear of the premises, it may have been in the premises or it may have been out the front of the premises.”
