Tasmania Police said the female was riding a bicycle and attempting to ride onto the highway, near Forth River Bridge, when she was hit by a car.
Inspector Adrian Shadbolt told Fairfax Media that preliminary indications suggest the cyclist entered the Bass Highway from Braddons Lookout Road.
“Preliminary indications are it appears she failed to give way to oncoming traffic,” he said.
“She has been struck by a motorist that was travelling towards Burnie. She sustained significant injuries and sadly died at the scene.”
The car involved was a sedan, being driven by a young woman, who was the sole occupant.
The crash is being investigated, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
As of 5pm on Tuesday, west-bound traffic was being diverted along Leith Road.
