Senator Birmingham said the state government had “done their job” in assessing centres, making the comments on ABC Radio Adelaide in which he criticised South Australia for having one in five childcare centres not assessed.
New figures from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority released this month show that out of Tasmania’s 232 childcare centres only 10 do not have a quality ranking.
Of those, 84 centres are ranked as exceeding the minimum standard, while 88 meet the standard.
50 centres are listed as working toward a national quality standard.
Assessment is a state-based responsibility ensuring all parents have clear information on childcare centre registration and quality.
Tasmania’s percentage of 96 per cent of centres assessed leads the states and territories, with Queensland close behind on 93 per cent.
