Organisers announced the date for the beloved family event this week, which raises thousands of dollars annually for The Examiner’s Empty Stocking Appeal.
The Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise manages the entire event, with preparations beginning six months in advance.
City of Launceston Alderman and Rotary member Danny Gibson said just 10 of the club’s 20 members planned and coordinated the entire event to a budget of less than $40,000.
Most of that money is raised through generous donations from local businesses, and only $5000 granted from the City of Launceston.
“We’re really proud of the event that we stage,” he said.
“It’s through the amazing, generous support of local businesses that we’re able to raise the $35,000 necessary to stage the event, and the amazing generosity of our all-local, all-volunteer performers.
“Musicians, singers, the MC, all of our volunteers, everyone gives up their time.”
He said the major costs for the outdoor Christmas celebration were primarily on infrastructure such as equipment and portable toilets.
Launceston Mayor Albert Van Zetten said the council was proud to support the “amazing depth of local talent” on show each year.
Hobart City Council recently asked for $100,000 from the state government to continue its Carols by Candlelight, which hosts about 10,000 people. The Hobart event has been moved to St David’s Cathedral.
