The Prospect Vale Golf Club member, 16, was captain of the Tasmanian team and had an excellent interstate series in April, winning four of his matches at the tough number one position.
Thomas will be joined in the Golf Tasmania group by Dylan Backhouse, of Tasmania Golf Club, Hallie Maeburn, of Royal Hobart and Mackenzie Wilson, of Tasmania.
The 72-hole stroke play championship runs from September 25-28 with no 36-hole cut.
READY GOLF
Both Golf Australia and Golf Tasmania have fully supported a decision by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews to introduce Ready Golf at its 2017 championships in a bid to improve the pace of play.
Ready Golf is a recommended solution for tackling slow play and enables golfers to play when they are ready to do so rather than strictly adhere to “the farthest from the hole” requirement.
This practice can be used in stroke play and some examples include hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play, playing a shot before helping someone look for a ball and adopting continuous putting when possible.
Tasmanian golfers can expect this condition to be in operation during a number of forthcoming events such as the men’s and women’s Tasmanian amateur qualifying rounds, the senior amateur and regional events similar to the men’s and women’s Northern amateur.
HOLDEN SCRAMBLE
Holden Scramble qualifying events are well underway across the state and Devonport Golf Club professional Darren Spencer hosted 18 teams from the North and North-West last week.
The winners were Mowbray combination Drew Ponting, Darren Kelp, David Woods and Sandra Boland with eight birdies for a gross 62, net 54 and five-eighths.
Forthcoming events are at Mowbray on August 27, Port Sorell on September 17, Scottsdale on September 24, Scamander River on October 8, Exeter on October 22, Greens Beach on October 26, Launceston on October 29 and Prospect on October 30.
FIJI OPEN
Former Seabrook professional Ryan McCarthy flew from Europe to Fiji last week for the international tournament at Natadola Bay but missed the cut after rounds of 82 and 72. Ex-Tasmanian Corey Crawford also missed out with 78 and 72.
MASTERS GAMES
Australian Masters Games organiser have lifted the number of entries to 144 players. The 54-hole events to be played at Devonport and Ulverstone from October 21-28 will see two shotgun starts and the heavily discounted entry fee is still available to Tasmanian residents.
