Keegan Buckley was navigating in the Scottsdale Classic Rally on Saturday with driver Darren Clark when they tragically lost control of the car and hit a tree stump.
Mr Clark, 49 of Sorell, died at the scene.
Mr Buckley was reportedly in a stable condition when he was taken to hospital, but suffered multiple fractures.
The 33-year-old shared a heartfelt message from his hospital bed on Monday.
He said he had “just woke up in hospital and read all of your messages of love and support”.
“Too many to write back to just yet,” he said.
“Still devastated … still a bit emotional.”
Tributes continue to flow for Mr Clark who has been remembered as a dedicated father, a determined competitor and a racing stalwart.
The 500 Car Club of Tasmania said it was “deeply saddened at the tragic loss of a much-respected member and dear friend”.
”Darren is remembered as a passionate and steady hand guiding the development of the club, participating as a competitor, organizer and officer for over thirty years,” the club said in an online tribute to Mr Clark.
“He was stalwart in abiding by rules, and being consistent and fair to all, while maintaining a determined competitiveness, bringing him much success along the way.
“Our thoughts go out to Theresa and Stu, their extended family and work colleagues, and all of our greater rally family who have shared our sport with Dazza.”
Their message was echoed by the Motor Sports Club of Tasmania who said its committee and club members were “deeply shocked and saddened”.
“Darren was a very well respected former member, and great club supporter in both competitor and official positions. We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to Theresa and Stuart, and to their extended families,” they said.
“We would also like to wish Darren's navigator Keegan Buckley a fast and full recovery, and extend a heartfelt thank you to all that attended the incident and did everything they could to look after them.”
Tasmania Police is continuing to investigate the incident.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
