The State Growth Department has temporarily installed number-plate recognition cameras in various locations around Launceston.
A department spokesperson said the cameras will collect origin destination information about commuter travel for about two weeks.
“The department uses this information to assess the impact of major developments, and to update long term traffic network modelling,” a spokesperson said.
The cameras belong to Austraffic, a company which conducts traffic, transport and pedestrian studies in Australia and New Zealand.
Cameras have been spotted on the Charles Street Bridge and West Tamar Highway.
