Faulkner, 27, was left out of Australia’s Champions Trophy squad after earning man of the match honours in the 2015 World Cup final.
However, he will tour India between September 17 and October 19 after being included in a 14-man squad on Friday along with Tasmanian teammate Matthew Wade.
Tasmanian Tiger Tim Paine, 32, also retained his spot as Australian wicket-keeper for the T20 leg.
“James Faulkner is a solid One-Day campaigner and is very familiar with sub-continent conditions, coming off a very good tour of Sri Lanka last year,” ODI squad national selector Trevor Hohns said.
“We hope that he will take his chance in returning to the one-day side.”
T20 national selector Mark Waugh said Paine was picked on the back of solid international showing at home against Sri Lanka in February and Big Bash campaigns.
