With more than 300 wild fires continuing to burn across Canada, Launceston firefighter Matthew Grant has jumped on an international flight and will spend the next month helping out his Canadian counterparts.

Currently the Station Officer at the Launceston Fire Brigade, Mr Grant will take on the role of Air Attack Manager in Air Operations in British Columbia, Canada.
“My deployment will be 33 days … my role will be as an air attack supervisor, providing coordination of water bombing aircraft,” Mr Grant said.
“It is a great opportunity for me and the Tasmania Fire Service to help out our fellow Canadian firefighters who have battling these fires for months.”

Leaving Launceston on Thursday night, he is expected to make his way to Vancouver on Friday.
Of the 317 fires burning across Canada, there are 100 uncontrolled fires in British Columbia, seven uncontrolled fires in Manitoba, 52 uncontrolled fires in Ontario and nine uncontrolled fires burning in Alberta. So far, the fires have burned more than 1.8 million hectares of land.
