Launceston and AIS Academy footballer Daria Bannister and North Launceston forward Callum Harrison have both been recipients of a Community Housing Limited scholarship, an initiative which is now in its third year.
In the past 12 months, Bannister has made her second appearance at the under-18 AFL women’s carnival, while Harrison played in the Dreamtime at the ‘G curtain raiser in May.
“The scholarship has enabled me to train hard to achieve my goals of getting drafted to the AFL Womens,” Bannister said.
“They’re just generally interested in what I want to achieve and want to help me get there so it’s been good.”
Organisation community development officer Brett Mansell said the scholarship was funded through Begents’ Max Buchanan Foundation and an annual fundraiser supported by Daniel Geale and Ricky Ponting.
“It’s a concept that was developed to give kids who live in the Northern Suburbs the best opportunity to reach their goals and dreams, we offer three scholarships at approximately $3500 a scholarship in the areas of education, the arts and sport,” Mansell said.
“Every kid we’ve supported have been really appreciative and really humble which I reckon is a fantastic trait of every young person that we’ve had involved.”
This year’s fundraiser will be held on October 6 at UTAS Stadium.
