And he did it in style, landing a double on Sudden Shock and Willby Rules.
The boy from Longford who was the leading apprentice in Melbourne before losing his way is now 26 years old and ready to resurrect a potentially lucrative career.
Asked how he felt after his first comeback win on Sudden Shock, Maskiell said: “I was pretty pumped after crossing the line.
“Then I saw my mum and got a bit emotional.
“But my biggest thrill was when I shook hands with my pop (Ken Hanson) because he’s been my biggest supporter.”
Maskiell is still working on his weight and had to shed two kilograms overnight to ride at 56.5kg.
“I’m now bloody thirsty,” he said.
Although he wasn’t totally happy with his ride on Willby Rules, the gelding still got home in a close finish to land a $6 to $3.90 plunge.
