TasTAFE hairdressing students were channeling the nineties with a ‘festival grunge’ theme for their annual Top Stylist competition on Wednesday.

Students researched music festivals for inspirational hair, clothes and makeup as well as celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Zayn Malik.

Apprentice Sam Jones said while the theme was festival grunge she still aimed for a feminine look.

“I have put in pastel chalks to brighten it up and put a bit of colour in and then with the make-up I have used a copper-grungey look,” she said.

“I’ve used the pastel through a fishtail braid and then use different colours through three individual braids as well.”

The day is not just about the competition with each student’s worked also judged for their Certificate III in Hairdressing assessments.

Students had two and a half hours to create their looks before facing a judging panel from industry and hairdressing companies.

Judge Renee Vandenbosch said she was looking for creativity, technique and something unique which supported the theme.

“I have seen a lot more braids coming through, they are really big with lots of texture and I am quite excited to see what they do,” she said.

“[It’s also about] what choice of styling tools are they going to use to achieve the texture they are after.”

The overall winner of the competition received the Natalia Pearn Perpetual Trophy.

Ms Pearn, who lost her life in a car accident in 2013, studied hairdressing at TasTAFE.

The trophy for the award features Miss Pearn’s scissors with her photo mounted on a plaque donated by her former employer, Joe’s Place for Hair.
