Murchison independent MLC Ruth Forrest said an audit into some child protection services being outsourced in the state could be undertaken by Auditor-General Rod Whitehead to ensure children were getting the care they needed.
“It’s up to [Mr Whitehead] whether he does it or not, but it does take the politics out of it,” Ms Forrest said.
On Monday, Mr Whitehead did not wish to comment on the calls.
Health Minister Michael Ferguson said the decision was “not one that should be influenced”.
“He’s an independent statutory officer and he can't be drawn into a political process, and he should not be,” Mr Ferguson said.
“The government shouldn’t be directing or discouraging it.”
Opposition child safety spokesman Josh Willie said the call was warranted.
“Given that we are talking about public money, we need to ensure that service providers are providing appropriate care, therapeutic care, for our most vulnerable kids,” Mr Willie said.
