St Patrick’s Football Club may have raised $21,000 for Beyondblue in two years, but players and officials say the five-figure sum doesn’t compare to the value of heightened mental health awareness at the club.

Saturday’s clash with ladder-leaders Old Scotch will mark the third Beyondblue fundraiser between the two teams since it started in 2015 as an initiative from reserves player Joeby Sadler.
Sadler, who has played three senior games this year, initiated the concept after the death of a close mate.
“It’s a pretty high-risk age group at footy clubs with young men so it’s good to raise awareness about it,” Sadler said.
“The money is obviously nice to raise but it’s moreso about the awareness and getting the boys talking about it so it’s not such a stigmatised topic.
“The first year was a ‘see how it goes’ and it went pretty well, so I think (club president Ian McCallum) wants to keep it as a yearly thing.”

McCallum said the club had set its sights on topping the $13,000 figure it raised at last year’s fundraiser.
“Most of the money is raised at the function on Saturday night, which is silent auctions and live auctions of various donations made by Launceston business people, and we’ve got sporting memorabilia and that sort of thing,” he said.
“Raising money happens naturally because it’s well organised, but it’s the awareness (that’s most important).”
The first-versus-fifth clash will get under way at 2pm at St Pats, with a reserves match at 11.50am.
