The construction will occur over three stages, project engineer Jade Kaye said.
Upgrades to underground infrastructure between Town Hall and the LINC is part of the first stage of works, and the space will be turned into a temporary pedestrian pathway.
“On Saturday we’ll be rolling out the longer-term site fencing, which will last through the stage one duration and stage two duration of the project,” Mr Kaye said.
“Stage one will be from the St John Street entrance into the end of the Town Hall. Each stage will have a key element through out the space and stage one will provide a water-play feature for all abilities and all age groups.”
An outdoor terrace and dining area will be created in stage two of the works, and stage three will allow for an events space.
“Completion of the project will be in the early stages of 2018 and whilst our objective is the delivery of this project our key objective is the safety of pedestrians through the stages,” Mr Kaye said.
The redevelopment works will include the installation of 15 new stormwater pits, 21 dynamic lighting poles, two catenary lighting systems, 176m of LED strip lights and 10 umbrellas.
