No doubt Four Springs Lake will be popular with trout stocks boosted last May and June by the Inland Fisheries Service adding 5240 wild brownies; 4240 adults from Great Lake and 1000 from Arthurs Lake.
According to an IFS survey, the most popular trout fishery in the season before last was Great Lake, visited by 6211 anglers, followed by Arthurs Lake with 5369, Woods Lake with 3868 and Penstock Lagoon with 3323 anglers.
The bad news for those planning to fish Tooms Lake is that due to vandalism, its campground toilet has been closed until further notice so visitors should consider bringing portable toilets.
The IFS also confirms that carp are confined to Lake Sorell, where no spawning or small carp have been found and less than one per cent of the population remains.
Running water will also appeal, with anglers checking sport on river systems like the Macquarie, Meander, South Esk and North Esk.
Rivers have benefited during winter from moderate, clear inflows, as has the Tamar Estuary.
One seasoned angler visiting lower stretches recently was impressed by the clarity of Long Reach brine.
Presenting squid bait, he was also happy with flathead caught – until cod appeared.
Rock lobster fisheries in the Maria Island and Storm Bay Bruny Zones will close from July 28 because of toxic algae.
