The half forward has stepped up into the midfield during the past month with several North Launceston prime ball movers sidelined by injury.
Ponting, 22, has filled the void with distinction alongside acting captain Brad Cox-Goodyer with Northern Bombers skipper Taylor Whitford (ankle) and rebounding defender Jay Lockhart (knee) out for most of July and not expected to return for another three weeks.
The pair have been among the ladder leader’s best players in fixtures against Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and Glenorchy.
I’m trying to find a bit of consistency, which I have probably lacked throughout my 50-odd games.

“I’m trying to find a bit of consistency, which I have probably lacked throughout my 50-odd games,” Ponting said.
“I started off in a half forward role, which is where I’ve played a majority of my footy, but with the injuries… I’ve had to go in and do a few midfield minutes. It has been enjoyable as it has got me into the thick of things.
“On small grounds like North Hobart Oval, playing at half forward can be a tough spot to play in as you just watch the ball go over your head every now and then – you’re pretty much a decoy.
“But it is a good role, you’ve just got to bring a lot of high pressure in those sorts of roles. You may not have 30-odd possessions a game but as long as you are bringing energy to the contest everything takes care of itself from there.”
The garage door installer said he would be open to continue to rotate through the middle once North is back to full strength but is happy to carry out whatever role is required.
Ponting, the nephew of former Australian cricket captain Ricky, has played four seasons at North on and off – winning a premierships with Rocherlea in 2013 and North in 2014, before trying his hand at Geelong West in Victoria in 2015.
A part of last year’s grand final loss to Glenorchy, Ponting said he thoroughly enjoys wearing the red and black jumper and is keen to hang around for more success.
“I’m pretty good mates with all the boys at North, it’s pretty much like a second family really,” he said.
“You go to the club and it’s pretty upbeat, especially after a rough day at work, it’s a great environment to be involved in.”
Ponting said North had a big month ahead with Tigers on Saturday and Clarence next weekend before the bye.
He said last week’s four-point win over the Magpies would hold the side in good stead.
