The Beerepoot family has not paid rates on three properties for three years, because they believe the land belongs to “the Heavenly Father” and is a matter between the council and God.
However, a mystery saviour made a last-minute payment of overdue rates last month for the two properties at Chudleigh that make up the honey farm.
Rates on the family home at Mole Creek have not been paid though, and the council is moving forward with its sale to recover the debt.
“We have accepted a proposal from First National Real Estate Deloraine to complete the public auction of 36 South Mole Creek Road,” Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins said.
“We will be meeting them this week to confirm advertising, auction date and venue for the sale.”
Cr Perkins said if the rates weren’t paid by the time the house went to auction, the proceeds from the sale would go to the family after the council recovered its debt.
“We’re serious about selling the property and it’s really important that they pay their rates.
“It will go to auction and I assume that would happen in the next four to six weeks.”
The council is meeting with the appointed real estate agents this week.
The next payment of rates for the two honey farm properties are due in August.
However, if they go unpaid, it will be another three years until the council can take action in relation to those properties.
