Dorset council mayor Greg Howard said having the infrastructure of more than 60 kilometres of world-class mountain bike trails is proving a long-lasting attraction.
The council is now looking at expanding to other long-lasting infrastructure, such as making the most of old mines for zip-lining and similar activities.
Cr Howard said even in the middle of winter Derby was still experiencing a high number of visitors staying an average of four days.
“Talking to some of the tourism operators, from middle of spring onwards they’re absolutely booked out,” he said.
“You look at the mountain bike publications around the world and Derby’s in every one of them.”
Cr Howard said lessons learnt from the EWS included the need for more catered accommodation and venues serving quality food open later at night.
