Hundreds of people packed Tullochs Auctions on Saturday for a chance to pick up a bargain classic.
There were gasps and chatter when lot six, the DeLorean DMC-12 made famous by Marty McFly and Doc Brown, flashed on the screen.
The price quickly escalated as those on the floor did battle with bidders on the internet.
Moments later the car was sold for $80,000 – much higher than the predicted sale price of between $30,000 and $40,000.
The successful sale of the DeLorean was followed by a $146,000 price for an LH Torana race car.
Tullochs Auctions manager Jessie Reid was thrilled with the sale of the DeLorean.
“It was sold new in Beverly Hills and hasn’t had many owners – it doesn’t have high mileage – it’s a pretty sweet car,” she said.
“It has far exceeded our expectations.
“I’m hoping it’s going to pull some more out of the woodwork because it would be fantastic to be the place to get DeLoreans in Australia and Tasmania.”
But the auction provided mixed results for sellers.
A 1951 Vincent Series 'C' Rapide Motorcycle sold for $60,000, an EJ Holden Special for $10,000, and a Rolls Royce Mulliner Park Ward Coupe went for $25,000.
But the jewel in the auction lot, a 1969 GTS Holden Monaro, did not sell.
While its estimated sale price was between $120,000 and $150,000 – the top bid was only $75,000.
The 1970 Ford GTHO replica also did not sell.
