It’s perfect timing in the school holidays, creating the ideal opportunity for families to take their youngsters on trips to transformed winter wonderlands.
While it signals fun and games for some people in our community, there are those for whom these are the longest days.
There is about six weeks left to go in The Examiner’s Winter Relief appeal for 2017.
The appeal, which runs annually, raises much-needed funds for people in the Launceston community who find themselves in need this winter.
The money is distributed among charity partners City Mission, the Launceston Benevolent Society, the Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul, who pass it through their channels to the places that it will be most effective.
This is the 59th year of the appeal, and the media outlet is hoping to raise more than $50,000.
Launceston, you should be proud of yourselves – with still six weeks to go, you have helped to raise more than $40,000.
To look through the donations list is to look directly into the definition of community spirit.
Donations range from $20, $50, even $200 from individuals.
Volunteer and social clubs hold special event nights to raise money just for the appeal.
And then there are the thousands of dollars that come in from anonymous donors.
Every cent that comes in makes a difference, not just to the physical support it shows, but the compassion that it demonstrates.
As aforementioned, the appeal still runs until August 31, and there is now the challenge to not just the bar for next year, but to smash it.
Less than a week remains on The Examiner’s silent auction for a one-off, aluminium photographic print of Launceston-born 2017 Tour de France competitor Richie Porte.
And community groups, businesses, and individuals are still encouraged to come forward with their donations.
In the shortest, darkest and coldest days of the year, it’s the generosity of the community around you that brings the most warmth and light.
