Even though homelessness or hardship may not have touched their lives directly, the owners and employees of the newsagency have all got compassion for those who do.

That’s why the business is supporting this year’s The Examiner’s Winter Relief appeal.

“You see so many people who are in need of help, you just don’t realise sometimes how many are really out there,” owner Viv Dolbey said.

Mrs Dolbey said while, thankfully, she had not experienced homelessness or hardship first hand, supporting the appeal made her more aware of just how lucky she really was.

Kings Meadows NEXTRA newsagency has had a long history of supporting The Examiner’s Winter Relief appeal, with the business placing tins on their front counter for about 10 years.

Mrs Dolbey said supporting local charities was something she and her husband John tried to do regularly through their business.

“We like to support different charities throughout the year,” she said.

“A little bit of change goes a long way. Every bit helps.”

The newsagency also supported The Examiner’s recent Mission Possible campaign that asked for donations of non-perishable food to be donated to City Mission.

The Winter Relief appeal partners with City Mission, the Launceston Benevolent Society, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.

Cash donations are asked for to help the charity partners deliver their services.

Employee Jan Boatwright said the appeal was always well supported by the community.

“They all know what it’s all about, when they see the tins they will put their change in,” she said.

“It makes you feel good, to know you are supporting others.”

Mrs Boatwright said the appeal was all about helping the community and supporting it was a positive thing.

The Winter Relief Appeal will run from June 18 until August 31. Funds go directly towards supporting four Launceston charities.
