Safety around farm animals is a hot topic for National farm Safety Week, with animal handling practices in the spotlight.
Safe Work Australia advises farmers to ensure animals are properly restrained before they are handled and design farm pens or yards so workers cannot be trapped or crushed.
Other animal handling tips include:
- Check you have a clear escape route,
- Ensure you are in a safe position,
- Avoid working alone and in badly-lit areas,
- Reduce distractions, such as mobile phones,
- Wear appropriate clothing,
- Have a first aid kit nearby.
