Which is why it’s pretty handy that organisers of MellowFest have scheduled this year’s event for July 8 instead of its customary date at the end of the year.
Again raising money for the UTAS Bachelor of Contemporary Arts’ graduation ball, MellowFest features a stack of musical maestros including Paper Souls, ex-Tasmanian Zac Eichner, Trent Buchanan and Denni Sulzberger.
Event curator Michael Rice said the show will also include comedy performances from Ned Townsend, Emergency Poncho and Stewart Bell.
“It’s showcasing local talent and past students that have done the course and moved on, and getting them back to show Launceston and Tassie what we can do on a BCA and make a fun night of it through music and comedy,” he said.
The event will also be held at a different venue to previous years’, with the Gunners Arms set to host the event for the first time.
“We thought that due to to the title and nature of the event it sort of deserves a more mellow venue, so we thought why don’t we throw out a smaller venue and see what comes of it – it’s an experimental year this year.
“We’ve also teamed up with Hamish Clark’s TasTAFE sound production students who’ll do all the technical sound and mixing for the bands, which is helping with that Launceston collaborative sort of feel.”
MellowFest gets under way at 4.30pm on July 8 and tickets are $10 on the door.
