Selling books on every topic and from every genre for the benefit of Tasmanian children in need, the Variety Monster Book Fair opens its doors on Saturday at the Country Club, Prospect.
Variety Tasmania state manager Luke Doyle said 35 pallets of books , DVDs, CDs and puzzles had been donated from across the state, and 22 pallets were sorted and ready for exchange.
Mr Doyle said more than 1000 bibliophiles are expected to descend over the weekend, hoping to beat last years’ book fair collective total of $41,000 funds raised.
“That’s the equivalent of four motorised wheelchairs, of a Sunshine coach which helps kids with limited mobility get out and about in the community, of two Liberty swings, so it really makes a tangible impact,” he said.
It can be a tough ask, being a volunteer at the book fair, as unpacking pallets and pallets of books can quickly digress into discovering new and old favourites. Mr Doyle said he found of his favourite childhood books, which he took home to read to his own children.
“All of the money we raise will go into our grants program, to assist Tasmanian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have additional needs,” he said.
Mr Doyle said the best part of the job was making the call to tell families their child had a new opportunity thanks to money raised.
From 10am to 6pm on Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, you can collect a stack of books and buy them for just 90 cents a centimetre at the Country Club.
