Autism Tasmania has taken a strong stand against Senator Pauline Hanson’s comments on children with a disability or autism disorder being segregated from mainstream classrooms.

In a statement, Autism Tasmania says Senator Hanson’s comments are “reprehensible” and “in direct conflict witht he evidence of the benefits for all provided by inclusive education practice”.
“Autism Tasmania Inc normally goes about its work to advocate for systemic change for better outcomes for people on the autism spectrum away from media spotlight,” the statement reads.
“However, on this occasion we cannot stand back and not challenge such hurtful and uninformed comments.”
Senator Hanson stood by her comments despite calls to apologise.
"These children need special care and attention. They are not getting it in a normal classroom. If they need special care and attention, then give it to them. You can actually have a special classroom to teach them in class hours,” she said.
