They are a fixture of local events, it’s not often you go to a community-run initiative and don’t see the blue tents of the Rotary Club members who give up their time to serve food to the masses.

This year, some of that fundraising effort has turned sausages into a $2000 donation for The Examiner’s Winter Relief Appeal. 

Rotary Club president Charles Black said the club had a long history of supporting the appeal because of its focus on local services for its community.

“I think we’ve been supporting the appeal since the beginning, since it started,” he said.

At the end of each fundraising effort, Rotary Club of Launceston’s board has a meeting to decide where the money will be spent and for which causes.

Mr Black said The Examiner’s Winter Relief Appeal was always a top contender and considered for the role it plays in helping the less fortunate in the community.

“It’s a worthwhile cause and we do focus on trying to give back to our local community,” he said.

“This year Rotary had a motto of ‘Rotary servicing humanity’ so we tried to make that our real goal.”

Rotary Club of Launceston was formed in 1924 and has 41 members today.

The Winter Relief Appeal has been running for 60 years and supports four Launceston-based charities.

The charities are St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, City Mission and the Launceston Benevolent Society.

This year we have set a target of $50,000 and there are a variety of ways the community can be a part of it.

Businesses and community members can all donate to the appeal, which goes to support the four charities deliver their services to those suffering hardship this winter.
