The blaze was reported about noon on Wednesday with crews from six brigades attending the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the fire found a chimney fire had sparked the blaze and caused about $1 million in damage to the property, known as View Point.
When crews arrived the farmhouse was fully engulfed in flames but they battled hard to save a number of outbuildings on the property at Isis Road, Barton, near Campbell Town.
The two-story building was well alight and the roof collapsed.
View Point is owned by the well-known Gatenby family and is the nucleus of a string of historic farm buildings the family owns in the area.
The property spans about 4500 hectares and is still in owned by the family.
It was built in 1860 and was a traditional Georgian/Victorian homestead that was kept in impeccable condition.
The main four-storey homestead was built of 92,000 bricks with four brick pilasters that extend two storeys, with large 24-paned windows on the ground level and 20 paned windows on the second level.
The outbuildings include a large two-storey brick barn and stables, a blacksmith cottage, an old cookhourse and a carpentry shop that was converted to shearing quarters in the 1950s.
View Point spans from the Isis River to a quarter of the way up the Western Tiers.
