Medical Research Week runs from June 2 – 10, 2017, the week organised by The Australian Society for Medical Research and aims to highlight current medical research issues.
In Launceston The Clifford Craig Foundation was established in 1992, with the sole intention to have a community body that could make the Launceston General Hospital better than your average regional hospital.
“We make medical research opportunities possible for those who come and work here, making the LGH a more attractive place for doctors and medical professionals,” CEO of The Clifford Craig Foundation, Peter Milne said.
“From that the benefit is we get better doctors that want to come and work in the community of northern Tasmania.
“The more skilled and highly qualified doctors that come to work here, means better access to healthcare and to specialist services.”

The research undertaken through the Clifford Craig Foundation are into the issues and the illnesses that affect the people of this region.
“These medical professionals deal with a regular patient workload and are seeing first hand the medical issues people are faced with, the natural instinct of a doctor is to investigate how we can make these things better,” Mr Milne said.
“That is when they come to us with their research ideas and we facilitate the funding, enabling them to undertake their research here in the local community.”
For The Clifford Craig Foundation, Medical Research Week is an opportunity to inform the local community about the work that they carry out year on year.
“Alot of people don’t probably give medical research the respect it deserves and that is because they probably don’t understand it well enough,” Mr Milne said.
“Research goes into every aspect of health care, from prescription drugs to surgical procedures everything is researched to make sure it provides a benefit to the health system and patients.
“Medical Research Week is highly important as it makes Joe Public understand what medical research is all about and it brings what we do to the forefront of the community.”
The Clifford Craig Foundation will be marking Medical Research Week by hosting their annual Deer Shott Lecture on Tuesday, June 6.
This year’s topic is Motor Neurone Disease and will be presented by the critically acclaimed Professor Matthew Kiernan, Professor of Neurology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.
