Some of the state’s northern distilleries gathered at the Hagley homestead on Monday to get a closer look at the venue for one of the regional dinners to be held during Whisky Week.
After the success of its first year in 2016, Tasmanian Whisky Producers Association is hosting Tasmanian Whisky Week between August 4 and 13.
Events throughout the extended week include distillery open days, tasting master classes, whisky and local brewery boilermaker evenings, hands-on whisky making experiences and dinners, association president Robbie Gilligan said.
“It’s the tight-knit nature of the local distilling community that really makes Tasmanian whisky so special,” Mr Gilligan said, along with, “Tasmania’s pristine water, clean air and barley grown in rich fertile soils also help”.
“It has always been a feature of the industry — right from the early days,” he said.
Northern distilleries involved in Tasmanian Whisky Week include Adams Distillery, Corra Linn Distillery, Launceston Distillery, Southern Wild Distillery, Fannys Bay Distillery, Hellyers Road Distillery and Ironhouse Distillery.
Kingsway Bar is holding a Fannys Bay whisky tasting on August 10 event, distiller Mathew Cooper said.
“It will be an opportunity to taste a number of expressions of our whisky,” Mr Cooper said.
“Ours is the smallest distillery in the state, so it will be very hands on,” he said.
A selection of emerging distilleries will be at the Quamby Estate dinner on Friday, August 4, sharing stories of how they started and where they see themselves and the whisky industry in the future.
“Expect progress reports, first release sneak peaks, tasting of new make spirits, good times and stories aplenty,” Mr Gilligan said.
Quamby Estate has designed a menu to complement the whiskies to be showcased during the dinner, and is encouraging whisky fans to stay for the weekend to enjoy the rest of the events on offer.
