Organisers shortened the traditional course in fear of a forecast thunderstorm with 170 athletes tackling a seven-kilometre kayak, a 6.5km run and a 12km mountain bike through Trevallyn Nature Reserve.
“We shortened the course to make sure we were finished by 2pm to avoid a forecast thunderstorm [and] we were also conscious of not damaging the refurbished mountain bike tracks,” co-organiser Louise Padgett said.
“But as it turned out the sun came out and it was a lovely afternoon for compeition.”
Alps defeated Victorian Kathryn Morland in a tight battle for her second-straight victory, while Parker, in his fifth attempt, was first across the line from Andrew Watson in second place and reigning champion Alex Hunt in third. Ironhouse Brewery secured the men’s and women’s team's contests and Alps and Amici claiming the mixed team event.
Deon Birtwhistle (men’s) and Naomi Oshea (women) were too good in the mountain bike and running dry docker class.
Padgett said Launceston Church Grammar defeated Scotch College in the junior teams category. Alex Groves was the most successful junior participant.
