Five people have been killed on Tasmanian roads in May, more than the total deaths in the four months previous.
Emergency services were called to the crash on Nuttings Road at 9.20pm and on arrival emergency personnel worked to free the man who was trapped in a Toyota utility.
He died at the scene.
Deloraine Senior Constable Simon Triffitt said initial investigations indicated that speed may have been a factor.
Meanwhile a Burnie man was arrested about 11pm on Friday after he was allegedly detected travelling at 180km/h on the Bass Highway at Sulphur Creek.
Tasmania Police Sergeant Nigel Sheahen said the 22-year-old returned a blood alcohol reading a little over twice the legal limit for the holder of a full licence of 0.5 BAC.
“The driver was subsequently arrested, charged and bailed to appear in the Burnie CPS on a later date, whilst his motor vehicle was clamped for a period of 28 days,” Sgt Sheahen said.
“Police would like to remind motorists that driver behaviour such as this, may result in a catastrophic outcome and that speeding shatters lives.”
Of the nine people who died on the state’s roads in 2017, four were travelling on motorbikes. Of the five people killed in May one was in a van, one drove a ute and three were in cars.
There were 19 deaths on Tasmania roads at the same time last year.
