“We do need to look at whether the state league is in as good shape as it can be in producing national calibre athletes,’’ Pidgeon said.
“The biggest issue is the disparity between the teams in terms of competitiveness.
“I was asked the question of whether we have the right amount of teams, and I don’t think we have the answer to that.
“But what we know at the moment is that the talent pool isn’t being developed well enough.”
Pidgeon was also mindful of what he said was “the imminent threat” of AFLW and women’s cricket to participation numbers at the grassroots level, with netball now having serious competition.
He said the potential of the state hosting more Collingwood matches would be discussed and he hoped Diamonds Test matches would be played in Tasmania on a “more regular basis”.
