The study aims to find out whether such a precinct would be suitable in Deloraine.
Meander Valley Financial Service’s board director Lindy Norton said the idea came from a group of community members wanting to put all the sporting facilities in the one area.
“The bank had known about those ideas and agreed to put up some money for a feasibility study, if the council would partner with us,” she said.
Mrs Norton said the aim of the facility would be to be available to anyone who wants to get up and get moving.
“We’ll look at what sporting facilities might move and also community groups that might come up, it’ll just be some public open space, so anyone who wants to walk their dog or go for a fun,” she said.
The proposed new site for the facility is in Alvestone Drive.
“The community complex is there, and there is a paddock next to that. But that’s the point of the feasibility study, to see if that is suitable as a possibility,” Mrs Norton said.
The precinct is planned to be a long-term project, with the board of the Community Bank agreeing to spending $50,000 per year, for five years.
“Obviously that depends on the result of the study, but we’re keen to invest in our local community and we see this precinct as a way of doing that.” Mrs Norton said.
Deloraine Football Club’s president Shaun Donohue said it would mean a lot for the club to move.
“Where we are situated at the moment is obviously right on a flood plain, just this week we have nowhere to train because it’s so wet,” he said.
Mr Donohue said he was part of the original group who started pushing for the idea, along with the town’s basketball, netball, squash and little athletics club.
Mrs Norton hopes the study is completed by mid September. A community consultation session will be held at the Deloraine Community Complex on Thursday, June 1 from 7.30pm and a site walk through on Friday at 12.30pm.
