The Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea marked its two decade anniversary on Thursday, with events held across the state. Among the biggest in Launceston was at the Cancer Support Centre, where more than 100 people packed in for a cuppa.
Cancer Council Tasmania’s senior team leader for community engagement, Rebecca Townsend, said the morning tea was a good example of the work they do on a daily basis at the the centre.
“The main aim of the day is for people to have a cuppa and a chat,” she said.
“As a centre, we provide emotional and practical support to the 5000 people who visit us annually.
“The Biggest Morning Tea tends to get bigger every year, which is fantastic.”
Nearly $4.5 million has been raised by Biggest Morning Tea events in Tasmania in the last twenty years, with all the funds going towards cancer research and cancer support.
There were about 800 hosts last year, as work places and community groups held events.
Cancer Council Tasmania CEO Penny Egan said it remains one of the Cancer Council’s “most important” fundraisers.
