The four-loop course was arranged so that competitors did not know how they fared until the end. Darkness added an extra challenge to mastering the map and course in the fastest time.
Fastest competitor was Australian junior representative Joseph Dickinson who completed the course in 11 minutes 16 seconds, 24 seconds faster than second-placed Carlin White.
Third fastest was Launceston Church Grammar School student Bayley Fisher.
The night event gave orienteers some valuable practice for a weekend of sprint orienteering planned for the June long weekend.
The Launceston sprint extravaganza will comprise six events over three days including two at night.
Venues will range from school campuses to city parks and include one bush setting.
