So imagine how surprised Ms Beever was when she flung open the front door and was greeted by a peacock.
“I could not believe my eyes. Of all the knocks at the door I did not expect to answer the door to a peacock,” she said.
The peacock, which Ms Beever has temporarily named Wentworth, quickly made himself at home.
He spent the afternoon roaming around Ms Beever’s garden and taking leisurely strolls on the veranda.
A social media search for the peacock’s family was launched by Ms Beever on Wednesday.
Many neighbours took to the Facebook to report seeing Wentworth loitering the streets of Newstead, but it remains a mystery as to where Wentworth calls home.
“It seems that Wentworth has been lost for nearly a month and would like to be reunited with his family,” Ms Beever said.
