He was 59.
A former teacher at Kings Meadows High School, Edwards reported on a wide variety of sports during 15 years with the masthead.
Sports editor Rob Shaw said he could not think of anybody more professional, respected and, above all, fun to work alongside.
“Phil was a particularly well-trusted figure at sports grounds across Tasmania,” he said.
“In addition to being an excellent and dedicated journalist, Phil was also a great mate. There wouldn't have been many days in the past 15 years when we haven't shared a laugh.
“We will all dearly miss those laughs.”
Family have invited all friends to the funeral service at a date to be advised.
