Tasmania Police reported the man, 78, had been found about 11.30am on Wednesday near the walking track at Long Point Road.
The man’s next of kin has been notified of the death.
Hobart CIB Detective Inspector Ian Whish-Wilson said detectives were appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the man prior to his death.
“Until the cause of death can be established police are investigating what took place in the time leading up to his death,” he said.
“It’s important that we establish the man’s movements this morning, including how he got to the area.
Det-Insp Whish-Wilson said one line of inquiry the police were taking was to ascertain whether the man had been involved in an altercation during the morning before he was found.
“We have received information about an altercation near the casino but we don’t know whether the deceased man was involved.
Anyone who witnessed an altercation between two men on Sandy Bay Road near the casino or anyone who saw the man or anything suspicious on Long Point Road should contact the police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
