Boasting a lineup which features Andy Collings, Stewart Bell, Dan Taylor, Kerri Gay, Jake Baylis and Ned Townsend, Kingsway Comedy will see comedians performing 10-minute sets in a relaxed atmosphere.
Show producer Stewart Bell said he expected the Kingsway Bar setup would provide a great setting for a comedy show.
“If it could be a regular thing that’d be great, I think it’s important to have another room that local guys can get up at and get some more experience so that’s really important for us,” Bell said.
“The idea behind it is to give established comedians in Tasmania the opportunity to perform a decent length set and perhaps do material that is rehearsed, so we’re trying to make it a professional, well-run show.”
The chance to perform a longer set comes as music to the ears of Andy Collings.
“What I love about it is that it’s all established comedians on the bill and they’re all longer sets,” Collings said.
“It means you can get a bit of crowd rapport going, have a narrative and still crack a few jokes without feeling rushed and I’m really looking forward to that.”
Collings said he hadn’t yet locked in his material for the night, but had plenty of ideas up his sleeve.
“I usually walk into town from West Launny and decide on the way out of a bunch of jokes that I’ve already written.
“I do a bit of dad stuff - sometimes I feel like it’s a cop-out and it’s not really intellectually dense to do jokes about nappies, but I’m a stay at home dad and there’s not many out there.
“Only three per cent of the male population are the primary carer for their young kids so for me that’s an interesting angle to come from and to compare it with a lot of parents.
“I do a bit of a thing how mums just seem so good at it and I struggle so much, and I like to bring in political issues around it as well.”
Kingsway Comedy will be held at 8pm on May 18.
Entry is free.
