The Examiner has just celebrated its 175th birthday, and City Mission Launceston is no spring chicken at the age of 163.
For six weeks, the media outlet and the charity will work together for Mission Possible.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage the community to rally around those who need help making ends meet.
We’re encouraging individuals, schools, community groups, and local businesses to donate non-perishable food products to City Mission, which can go on to dispense the products to their clients.
It is a drive across Fairfax Media Tasmania, with sister news outlet The Advocate championing the cause in the North-West.
The goal? To collect 10,000 items across the state, to see the charity through the harsh winter period.
The demand facing City Mission is growing. The organisation had 300 new clients in the last financial year.
The clients come from all walks of life – single people, families, couples, all of which have different needs.
Many of them will be seeking charity for the first time in their lives.
The campaign highlights the importance of community banding together to help those who have fallen on hard times.
A lot of us are just one or two turns of bad luck from having to ask for a hand up.
If every person in Launceston could find one thing to donate, we could help so many people.
So the challenge has been thrown down. Bring your work group together, your neighbourhood, your school, or just your household, and spread the message.
All it takes is an extra can of pasta sauce here, a box of cereal there, and you’ve made a difference.
While you have the capacity, do your best to help someone get back on their feet. You never know when you will be the one searching for that hand to help you up.
To get involved and make a difference, keep an eye out for stories in The Examiner in print, and online.
In the weeks to June 11, we’ll be profiling those who donate, those who benefit from donations, and those at City Mission who give their time to help.
Together we can make this mission possible.
