However, the man that led the Launceston-born pair to a string of domestic honours believes both still have plenty to offer Australian cricket.

“From James Faulkner’s point of view it’s very disappointing and a bit difficult to understand because he’s still the No.1 all-rounder in the country,” Coyle said.

“He’s had a few injuries of late which have affected him but it’s my understanding that he is a very valued member of the national team.

“I think most people were surprised. Not playing in the Champions Trophy maybe you could accept on team balance, but not being on the contract list is hard to understand.”

With an average of 34.06 with bat and 30.08 with ball from 67 One-Day Internationals plus 24 T20s and one Test match to his name, Faulkner should retain national aspirations, Coyle said.

“I don’t think you can close the door on James. At 26, it’s not the end for him. He’s a great competitor with an excellent record, particularly in big games as we saw in the World Cup final. He was player of the match, you can’t ignore that.

“He’s got to get his body right, play good cricket and force his way back in.”

At 34, Bailey’s demotion was less surprising but Coyle believes the Tigers stand to benefit from their captain’s national credentials which include an average of 40.58 from 90 ODIs plus 29 T20is and five Test matches.

“I suppose George is getting towards the end of his career and the age card does get played,” Coyle said.  

“George is probably a victim of that but it is worth remembering he has had an outstanding international career and has a lot of cricket left in him, let’s hope that’s for Tasmania. 

“George is pretty realistic about where he is and I’m sure he’s still very determined to help Tasmania turn their fortunes around.”
