The competition made up of four teams – Evandale, Rocherlea, Prospect and Scottsdale – is sure to create plenty of interest over nine home and away rounds.

Each team will play each other three times with the season to conclude in a double-header final where third will play fourth and first will battle second in the grand final on July 8.

The competition will be managed by AFL Tasmania and it is hoped in time it will grow to include more clubs from the region.

CLUB SAYS: After initially playing in the State League, Evandale will now compete in the new regional competition.

The players have completed a strong pre-season and are looking forward with positive enthusiasm.

While we have lost some quality youngsters, we have acquired a new group of players from different sporting backgrounds (including netball and touch football) who have already shown great signs during the pre-season.

The competition seems to be really even, and being competitive in every game is our goal.

CLUB SAYS: We have set a primary goal to put in place the foundation for a strong female football program across all levels of the participation pathway.

Last year we formed a youth girls’ team in the NTJFA and conducted a junior girls program for 38 girls over six weeks.

This year we are continuing the junior and youth teams in the NTJFA and have also introduced all-girls AFL Auskick and also our Senior Women’s team in the new regional competition.

Pre-season has seen a slow build up of numbers and we are still recruiting and in need of more players.

We have found that age is no barrier if prepared to have a try as most female players are all starting at a similar level of experience and skill.

We have been able to attract a few players who have had a number of games in the TSL, NTJFA or elsewhere and will help our team to be competitive.

CLUB SAYS: The club has embraced women’s football with the appointment of former Launceston players Amanda Sweeney (coach) and Jenna Sampson (captain).

The team comprises a squad of 32 players of mostly locals who are new to football.

Sweeney said: “They are a great bunch of girls who have improved amazingly since our first training run and three recent practice games; the improvement is evident”.

“For some, it’s their first taste of AFL after spending years watching their fathers, brothers and partners playing – now it’s their turn to shine. There is much excitement and anticipation in the lead up to the first official game.”

CLUB SAYS: Scottsdale is very proud to be fielding a team in the inaugural TWL regional competition.

After the recent success of the lightning premiership "come and try" evening held at Rocherlea, and the strong interest of our youth girls team in the NTJFA, the club is delighted with the impact that women's football is having on the North East community.
