The 19-and-under state team saved their best for last in a 39-20 victory against Northern Territory in a playoff for seventh spot.
Coach Andrew Jackson said the breakthrough win over a composite side that included four players from Victoria and New South Wales was a timely reminder.
“We finally put it altogether, but we had three draws during the week, which has been annoying,” he said.
“The first time we played Northern Territory, we should have beaten them quite easily. We also should have beaten the ACT the first time and again yesterday.
“So it’s at least good to finish off with a win.”
Tasmania could have been fighting for a fifth finish had it defeated ACT in the semi-final round.
The match was tied at full-time, with the hosts winning 37-32 in extra time.
Jackson also said the opening six-goal loss to Western Australia was up for the taking “but for mistakes at crucial moments”.
“It’s a bit frustrating, it’s been a bit tricky because while they have performed well, it could have been so much better,” he said.
“They’ve fared well and match up against the top teams, but for consistency.”
The 17-and-under team finished last after a 31-16 loss to Northern Territory.
Tassie had won the first encounter by eight goals.
“Definitely the standard they play here is better than what they play in their seniors in state league,” he said.
“So it’s a big step up and a real learning curve.”
