South Hobart, currently engaged in a four-way battle for competition honours, simply proved devastating in a 7-1 rout over City.
Just seven days out from meeting their round-seven conquers in Hobart, City has the inevitable task of facing a South again in the Lakoseljac Cup quarter-final. The side’s only solace is that the return fixture will be at Prospect.
Ken Morton’s men pulled out all the stops, cracking a season-high 16 shots on goal to City’s three.
That in itself is a remarkable feat considering just two weeks earlier, South had just 15 shots towards a 10-0 win over Kingborough Lions.
By the interval on Sunday, the hosts were already up four goals as the encounter appeared a fait accompli.
Alex Walter captured his hat-trick by the 53rd minute and poignantly City already were trailing 6-0.
The respite came in two ways for City: 33 minutes without conceding – the longest period all day – and reducing the margin to 6-1.
American Dylan Williams combined with Andy Compagne to score in the 85th minute. But South were not to be outdone, Adam Gorrie replying within 60 seconds.
